Our Pupil Voice Groups

At Rhosddu we firmly believe that children need autonomy in expressing their thoughts, ideas and opinions and that they should be able to influence how our school community continues to develop and evolve. This is an important part of ensuring our learning and environment reflect the needs and experiences of our learners.

School Council:

School Councils provide children with a real opportunity to participate in making decisions that affect them and others within the school and the wider world.
The children and members of staff involved in the Rhosddu School Council have a very important role to play in the life of the school, and indeed the local and international community to which they belong.
The Welsh Assembly Government has said that all schools in Wales must have a school council, and have laid down some minimum standards, such as members of the school council being elected by secret ballot and having at least 6 meetings a year.

At Rhosddu, each class elects two members by secret ballot at the start of each academic year.
The School Council will meet at least once every half-term and will, over the course of the year, be involved in projects of their own design. The council members will act as a voice for their classmates and, through their experiences, will learn a great deal about democracy and teamwork.
Children will have the opportunity to make positive changes to their own daily lives at school, and to the lives of others.

School council is supported and facilitated by Mrs. J. Jones

Eco Council:

What is Eco Council?

Eco Council is a group of pupils who meet regularly to discuss eco-friendly and environmental issues within school which prepares children to live their future lives with consideration for global issues. The Eco Council consists of two pupils from each class. The Eco Council are representatives for their class and will ensure that they communicate with their peers and involve the whole school in their actions.

Why do we have an Eco Council?

-To ensure our school is eco-friendly and prepares pupils to live with consideration for their environment.

-To make sure each class has a platform to voice their opinions.

-To discuss and raise issues related to the environment

Criw Cymraeg:

Here at Rhosddu we have a well-established ‘Criw Cymraeg’. Our role is to support our Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus journey. We play a pivotal role as we serve as dedicated champions of the Welsh language, promoting and encouraging the use of Welsh within our school community. We help to create a thriving bilingual environment. The Criw Cymraeg consists of representatives from each year group and we meet weekly with Mrs Devlin and are supported by Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Brown. During our weekly meetings, we discuss progress towards our 10 Cymraeg Campus targets and discuss new initiatives. We have gained our ‘Cymraeg Campus Bronze Award’ and we are now working hard towards our silver award

Happiness Heroes:

Being a Happiness Hero is an opportunity for children to be an ambassador for the school and to help other children get the very best out of our ‘myHappymind’ programme.

Each Happiness Hero has a badge to wear in recognition of the fact they have been chosen for the job, whilst also helping other children know who they can speak to about wellbeing.

In addition to the Happiness Heroes thinking of their own ideas about how to help others, they are also encouraged to remind their classmates and pupils across the school of the good learning habits they have developed through each of the myHappymind modules e.g. happy breathing when someone is upset. The Happiness Heroes also help teachers during assemblies to hand out certificates to children who have been nominated for excellent myHappymind learning.

This is facilitated by Mrs. M. Clubbe and Mrs. J. Hughes and has members from every class across the school.

As part of the programme all parents have access to the myHappymind app and are encouraged to use this with their child at home. Further information about the scheme can be found here: Home – myHappymind

Digital Champions:

Our Digital Champions are responsible for the use and care of IT equipment within school, such as handing out, charging, storing and maintaining items. They work closely with Miss. Singleton to ensure that all pupils are able to access digital technology in a safe and responsible manner and are the ‘go to’ students with questions and thoughts about technology. Throughout the school year the Champions will have the opportunity to attend an IT club to brush up on their expert skills, so they are able to use this knowledge to support learning across the school.
